The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Research Associate (Post Doc) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
This Research Associate (Post Doc) (RAPD) position in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) works with Principal Investigators (PIs) and CEOAS scientists on problems in Ocean Mixing specifically related to an intensive air-sea interaction experiment to take place off Luzon Island, Philippines in summer 2018. The RAPD performs extensive analysis of data from shipboard measurements, newly-developed mixing meters, as well as ancillary data from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) equatorial mooring arrays in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. This position develops theory to help explain dependencies and publishes results in respected scientific journals. The RAPD will interact with the broad range of Ocean Mixing activities in CEOAS, including the regular, but informal, weekly Mixing seminar series.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and three oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus, the 84-foot coastal research vessel Pacific Storm, and the 54-foot coastal research vessel Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a M.S. degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.
Requires PhD or terminal degree and experience in the academic discipline/unit.
Doctorate (PhD) in Physical Oceanography or closely related field.
Demonstrated aptitude for analysis of extensive data sets.
Demonstrated ability to take the lead in the analysis and publishing of the results.
Will be required to work in oceanic environments from various research ships, including launching and retrieval of scientific equipment, maintenance and repair of equipment, and proper sample collection techniques. This aspect of the job takes place on a moving platform, therefore safety is of utmost importance. Safety procedures are common to all research ships and are required to be followed as explained by the captain and crew of each ship at the start of and during each voyage.
