Earth and Space Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Software Engineer who is well versed in environmental (particularly seismic) monitoring to join our regional seismic network operations team. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) is the authoritative source for seismic data and earthquake information in the region. Using real-time data from about 400 seismic stations throughout the states of Washington and Oregon, PNSN produces a variety of information products for seismic hazards awareness. The position's core responsibilities are to develop and maintain software to deliver seismic network data and knowledge products to our clients via a web interface, and as a team member to help develop and maintain seismic network software for data acquisition, processing, and archival, and the production of real-time data products.
This job entails much more than "set it up and let it run"; PNSN's website is dynamic and developing. It serves users both users external to the seismic network and University but also internal PNSN operational staff. Backend processes run on our PNSN-managed site, while the front-end serves users from the (currently AWS) cloud. An understanding of both the Earth Science aspects of the information being served and also the network operational (data-gathering)processes is important.
The PNSN website (pnsn.org) is a highly visible and trusted information source for knowledge about earthquakes and volcanoes in the region. The site exposes our region and the University to global recognition. They place the UW in the forefront of technological advances to provide protection to society from earthquakes. This position is pivotal in successfully developing and maintaining the website. Responsibilities:
Design, test and build new web applications.
Maintain existing services and websites.
Manage automated testing and production deployments.
Provision and manage cloud and on premise server assets. Lead Responsibilities:

BS degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or equivalent work experience
At least three years developing, and deploying applications in a distributed and high availability environment.
Proficient in at least one compiled language such as Java or C.
Proficient in a scripting language such as Python or Ruby.
Proficient in RDBMS such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
Experience with at least one backend framework such as Rails or Django.
Experience building and launching at least one public facing web application.
Experience with working on a software team, and using collaborative tools such as git.
Comfortable with Linux environment.
Familiarity with Amazon Web Services
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.
Experience with deploying and managing high traffic production web application on AWS platform.
Experience with front end framework such as Angular.
Experience with at least one NoSQL technology such as MongoDB or Redis.
Experience using websockets for real time applications.
Experience with geologic and geophysic concepts.
Comfortable interacting with the general public.
