The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department (https://eps.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Junior Research Assistant, under the direction of Assistant Professor Myriam Telus. The Junior Research Assistant will assist with research in cosmochemistry, specifically processing synchrotron data, analyzing samples using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and assisting others with SEM measurements.
Applicants with any of the following are strongly encouraged to apply: at least six months laboratory research experience at the undergraduate level; expertise in cosmochemistry; proficiency with programming languages such as MATLAB, Fortran, and/or Python; and/or experience operating a scanning electron microscope.
ACADEMIC TITLE Junior Specialist
SALARY $39,672 annually
B.S. or B.A. degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in geology, geochemistry, planetary sciences, material science, applied mathematics, or a related field at the time of application
Experience using Excel data analysis functions (e.g. sum, averaging, standard deviation, plotting data [XY plots], and linear regressions)
POSITION AVAILABLE As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be full-time for six months, with the possibility of reappointment for an additional six months. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
