The Earth and Planetary Sciences Department (https://eps.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Beamline Scientist. The selected applicant will work under the direction of Professor Q. Williams under the aegis of the Consortium for Materials Science Research in the Earth Sciences (COMPRES: www.compres.us) approved program at Beamline 12.2.2. We are interested in a synchrotron radiation experimental scientist to work in the area of X-ray diffraction under extreme conditions on the state-of-the-art, internationally-used Beamline 12.2.2, based at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL: www.HighPressureXRD.lbl.gov). ALS Beamline 12.2.2 is a well-equipped and burgeoning beamline that generates a micro x-ray beam that is deployed on diamond anvil cell (DAC) samples in both radial and axial geometries. Beamline 12.2.2 focuses on three areas of expertise, namely: X-ray powder diffraction through DACs with in-situ laser heating, high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction on crystals in DACs, and in-situ/in-operando powder X-ray diffraction at high temperature and controlled atmosphere.
In conjunction with the LBNL research counterpart, the Beamline Scientist will be responsible for the development, scientific direction, and technical scope of the beamline, and will oversee the installation, operation, upgrades, and maintenance of beamline equipment in order to provide hundreds of COMPRES-affiliated users with a safe environment to conduct experiments. The position will require the incumbent to manage complex projects involving diverse populations of support personnel and vendors, keep organized and accurate records and documentation, employ excellent verbal and written communication skills, and collaborate effectively with the ALS staff scientist and engineer responsible for the beamline. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop a personal research program, potentially in collaboration with other ALS beamlines.
Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: high-pressure expertise, X-ray diffraction experience using diamond anvil cells, expertise in single-crystal diffraction, and/or experience with quantitative laser-heating within the diamond anvil cell.
