Job Summary/Basic Function: Position Summary: The successful applicant will work closely with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, laboratory supervisor and staff of the Center for Advances in Water in Air Quality (CAWAQ). Applicant will be responsible for basic laboratory tasks (sample preparation, testing, documentation, record keeping, housekeeping, maintenance, etc.) and various related office activities (internet/library searches, report writing, presentations, routing paperwork, etc.). In addition to basic laboratory tasks and office activities, applicant will be responsible for maintaining and operating laboratory equipment and instrumentation as well as participating in research projects. Applicant must be organized, self-motivator and willing to learn.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain chemical & equipment inventory in the Center's laboratories.
Ensure analytical instruments (GC, HPLC/MS, TOC, ICP, IC, SEM, TEM, reactors, etc.) in good operational condition (troubleshoot issues, perform preventive maintenance and schedule repairs)
Coordinate with Lamar researchers in instrumental analysis and maintain operational logs of instrumentation.
Place purchase orders, verify receipt and distribute supplies to investigators.
Evaluate data quality to determine potential issues related to quality control and implement corrective actions.
Assist project research teams in performing analysis.
Administer the online laboratory safety training courses.
Perform other assigned duties as directed by the Center directors.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: BS degree in chemistry, physics or related science major (e.g., biology, microbiology, geology or earth sciences). An ability to communicate with faculty members and research staff in technical context, and an understanding of academic research operation is a strong plus. The ideal candidate is an individual who is capable of multi-tasking in the lab and can work closely together with researchers with externally funded projects.
Skills: Experience performing sample analysis (wet chemistry, biological analysis, etc.) and operating basic laboratory equipment (autoclave, centrifuge and microscope). Must be familiar with research protocols and capable of troubleshooting and resolving common issues that arise in a research laboratory.
Knowledge in Environmental Chemistry Techniques, Laboratory Safety, Sterilization, Operation and Maintenance of Equipment and Instrumentation, Biohazard Safety, Laboratory Operation and Supply Management. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience of working in an analytical laboratory is preferred.
