GIS Scientist - Department of Geology & Geography 12126
The Department of Geology & Geography at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a GIS Scientist (Research Associate.351). The incumbent will c omplete applied research tasks and related GIS products that support the WV GIS Technical Center and its sponsors.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Produce data layers, maps, tables, and reports using GIS technologies for geological and energy applications.
Scan various source documents and digitizes map features.
Geo-reference maps, documents, and photographs for geographic information systems.
Manage an ArcGIS Online application for landslide incidents and susceptibility models.
Verify and publish landslide incident and susceptibility models.
Perform spatial analysis of data and make geographic information and applications suitable for the public or individual clients.
Train research staff on data processing, workflows, and spatial analysis.
Present on progress and deliverables of projects to research staff and clients.
Consults with Principal Investigator regarding the interpretation of results to achieve project deliverables.
Serves as an intermediary between Principal Investigator(s) and other entities for technical information exchange.
Bachelor of Science in geology or related field of study.
Six (6) months experience. Knowledge of GIS concepts.
Working knowledge of Esri Arc GIS Software face.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interact at all organizational levels and with technical staff, managers, and end-users.
Demonstrated ability to prepare technical documentation and justify approach used, resolve complex issues, explain technical features of an application or process.
Knowledge of basic cartographic design principals including experience in graphic design and user interfaces.
Demonstrated subject knowledge of geology topics to include landslides and oil and gas exploration.
Proven experience in mapping of landsides and mineral parcels.
