The Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ess.uw.edu) at the University of Washington seeks to hire up to three postdoctoral researchers as part of a new initiative in subduction zone science. These positions are fully funded, 100% FTE, for up to two years (the initial appointment being 12 months with the opportunity for extension), and candidates interested in all aspects of subduction zone geology and geophysics are encouraged to apply. Research areas of special immediate interest include: geodynamic modeling of the subduction process (including mantle convection and plate boundary processes), rock physics and geophysical imaging of plate boundary fault zones, structure and stress conditions in the shallow megathrust, and seismology and seismic structure of Cascadia from the volcanic arc to offshore. Specific research topics remain flexible and depend on the interests and expertise of the postdoctoral researcher as well as those of the faculty supervisors.
The postdoctoral hires will join a large and vibrant group at UW of more than 12 faculty across several departments with specific interests in this area, as well as numerous research faculty, postdocs, and graduate students who are engaged in integrated research on subduction zone geosystems from offshore plate boundary zones to volcanic arcs. Areas of UW expertise include geodynamic modeling, fault zone physics and elastic properties, geodesy, active and passive source seismology, tectonic geomorphology and surficial processes, marine and terrestrial geochemistry, petrology, and magmatic processes, among many others.
Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. Applicants must hold a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in the Earth Sciences, or in an appropriately related field such as Astronomy, Planetary Science, Physics, or Engineering. Candidates should have an aptitude for geological/geophysical principles as well as the ability to synthesize and analyze key observations. A successful candidate will conduct research that will result in publication in the open literature and participation in national or international meetings.
