In coordination with the CSET Student Relations Coordinator and other members of the CSET Advising Center staff, the Academic Advisor for Pre-Professional Tracks will assist students in developing and accomplishing educational goals associated with the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Minnesota State Mankato. The Advisor will serve as the primary initial contact for those students who have identified interests in future professional careers requiring a background in science and mathematics. Such programs include medicine, dentistry, optometry, chiropractic, veterinary science, and others. Responsibilities include: Advise first year students who indicate interest in pursuing pre-professional majors. Research, organize and maintain information regarding professional programs and CSET student success in admission to professional programs. Assist with all CSET orientation programs for new students. Participate in various admissions and university sponsored events and programs, to provide information about pre-professional majors.
Master's degree in Counseling and Student Personnel, Educational Leadership or other closely related field AND one year of experience as an academic advisor or in the provision of support services closely related to academic advising.
Bachelor's degree in a STEM field AND three years professional experience as an academic advisor.
Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills necessary for advising of students electronically, in one-on-one, small group and large group settings.
Demonstrated ability to learn new information quickly and to interpret information with attention to detail and accuracy including an ability to acquire and develop knowledge of relevant academic programs, policies, procedures and resources.
Experience with ISRS or similar student records systems and other technologies used in the provision of academic advising.
Experience working with students in STEM majors.
Demonstrated success providing developmental and intrusive advising services to students, including those who are struggling academically.
Ability to promote student learning, development and success by applying varied advising approaches to diverse student situations.
Demonstrated success providing support services and programming for students of color and other groups who are typically underrepresented in STEM fields.
Demonstrated ability to provide classroom instruction relevant to academic advising.
Demonstrated knowledge of typical requirements and processes for professional school admissions.
