Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Professional Technologist.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Design, maintain, and support an enterprise-level cluster of virtualized Windows using virtualization software such as MS Hyper-V or VMWare to support the academic and research mission of the Department of Geology and Geography. Research hardware and software solutions to optimize server cluster to ensure high availability. Maintain and support all Geology and Geography servers for a large variety of services including license management, file servers, print servers, etc. May require after hours and weekend availability to resolve critical system downtime.
Maintain security for all departmental IT devices. Research and apply solutions to remediate potential vulnerabilities and exploits. Work with College and University security staff to ensure all policies and procedures are followed.Ensure best practices are followed for securing Geology and Geography IT enterprise.
Configure network switches to support server and client communications. Work with College and University IT staff on complex switch and router configurations.
Maintain Windows server backups and also provide backup space for desktop workstations Windows, MacOS, Unix and mobile OSs. Advise researchers on backup solutions for research computing systems.
Manage student workers and Graduate Assistants/Professional Technologist interns in support of departmental IT resources.
Provide Backup technical support and expert knowledge on server administration to GIS Tech center and other ECAS system administrators.
Assist with Server, Desktop, and lab support for the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences as assigned.
Maintain and update as necessary the G&G website. Assist faculty with academic and research websites.
Solve problems with the department's computing infrastructure, often in time-critical situations. This may include configuration issues, upgrades and patches that cause problems, virus or intrusion situations, and hardware failure.
Maintain knowledge of current and developing hardware and software technologies. The department strives to maintain state of the art facilities to provide the student the best experience in preparation for their future jobs in the industry and to support the department's research mission.
License management for multiple software packages worth over $50 million and key to the department's annual multi-million dollar research mission, as well as the department's strongly technology-oriented teaching mission.
Purchase, install, and maintain software licenses required by the department and other WVU colleges and Health Sciences (ArcGIS; eCognition). Also includes license management for licenses served to other WV institutions (Erdas Imagine). Administer multiple license servers to efficiently distribute licenses to workstation clients.
Manage equipment and use of the department's five computer teaching laboratories and associated networked printers and other peripheral devices. The labs represent a large investment of resources and require general supervision of use as well as routine maintenance of equipment such as cleaning and inspection to maintain full functionality.
Support G&G faculty, staff, and student desktop computers (MS Windows PC, Apple MacIntosh, and Unix) and related equipment. Recommend, purchase, install, support, and maintain hardware and software used within the department. Maintain resources using management packages (SCCM, JAMF, and MDM). Assist users with mobile devices such as tablets and cell phones.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required. Degree/certification in technology field preferred.
2 years combined of the following:
Windows server administration.
Desktop support (Windows and MacOS).
Virtual server software (MS Hyper-V or VMWare) preferred.
Network setup and configuration preferred.
Experience with Geo software (ArcGIS, etc.) preferred.
Experience with Microsoft server operating systems.
Expereince with desktop support.
Experience with virtualization technology (Hyper-V or VMWare) preferred.
Experience with network setup and ethernet switch management preferred.
Experience with security policies and procedures preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact at all levels within the institution and with technical staff, other staff members, faculty, and students.
Excellent people skills are required for interacting effectively with diverse people, even under pressure.
Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written.
Strong problem solving skills are important to ensure the optimal maintenance of the computer resources especially during crises such as computer virus attacks, hardware failure, etc. The ability to solve problems quickly to reduce disruption to teaching and research is important.
Demonstrated ability to reason logically and analyze and solve problems.
Ability to define procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alterative recommendations.
Initiative and motivation to identify potential problems at an early stage; find and implement solutions.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks as needed.
