Geosciences Research Division (GRD)is home to 38 academics in various titles (Professor, Research Professor, Research Scientist, Project Scientist and Specialist), 10 Research Associates and Visiting Scholars, 10 Postdoctoral Scholars, 45 graduate students and 45 staff. GRD expends approximately $10 million annually in federal, state and private funds. The Division occupies over 65,000 square feet of space including research support space, research labs, geological collections space and administrative offices.
Under supervision, perform high precision quantitative analyses of oceanographic properties including: dissolved nutrients, CO2 parameters, oxygen, and salinity. Prepare equipment and chemicals for research expeditions.
Assist with the set up, operate, maintain, and repair instrumentation both at sea and on shore. Partially responsible for managing laboratory, ensuring a safe organized, clean and operational laboratory.
~ Position requires participation on research cruises of up to 2 months duration, for a total of up to 6 months annually.
Undergraduate degree in chemistry, natural or physical sciences.
Basic understanding of scientific analysis.
Demonstrated experience using physical and chemical methods in a laboratory setting.
Ability to perform standard repetitive laboratory techniques.
Ability in following step-wise experimental protocols.
Strong interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups of people exercising initiative and diplomacy.
Demonstrated oral and written communications skills.
Ability to perform various tasks in a phased manner at different times upon the instruction of the supervisor.
Proven ability to accurately maintain records (written and computer).
Ability to follow established protocols and lab procedures, with some direction.
Must travel globally without restriction.
Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
