The Department of Geography and Environmental Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications from scholars for a position as tenure-track Assistant Professor in human geography or related disciplines pursuing a research agenda in environmental health,social justice, and/or urban political economy. While we welcome candidates from a broad range of areas of specialization, we especially encourage candidates whose scholarly work critically engages with topics such as inequalities in health and well-being; race, gender, and other dimensions of identity and difference; migration and mobility; social movements and urban change; or environmental justice. The successful candidate is expected to develop an externally-funded research program while teaching a combination of introductory human geography courses and advanced courses (at the undergraduate and graduate levels) in their area of specialty. Preference will be given to candidates who add to the intellectual diversity of the department and have the potential to build new collaborations with current faculty. We also encourage applications from candidates with experience or interest in engaging communities beyond the university in research or courses. The position will begin in August 2019.

The Department has grown to more than 300 majors in recent years, with more than 60 graduate students in M.S., M.P.S., and Ph.D. programs. Faculty and graduate student interests span topics from urban geography to environmental science and management, and the department provides a rich and collegial environment for cross-disciplinary collaboration. The department is particularly strong in areas including urban geography, urban environments, environmental policy and management, water resources, ecology and conservation, and geospatial techniques. Several faculty and students explicitly incorporate issues of justice, inclusion, and diversity in their research and teaching. UMBC encourages faculty and students to engage with communities in research and teaching, and the Department has a strong record of such engagement both locally and abroad.
