The Department of Geological and Atmospheric Sciences at Iowa State University seeks an Atmospheric/Climate Science Postdoctoral Researcher under the supervision of Dr. Christina Patricola to investigate the physical mechanisms that drive future changes in tropical cyclone activity using high-resolution climate models.Â This position is part of a five-year project (Variability and Change in Tropical Cyclone Characteristics: Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Drivers and Coastal Impacts) supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Regional and Global Model Analysis (RGMA) program.Â The position calls for an individual with experience in climate research, climate modeling, high-performance computing, and analyzing large datasets. Â
The successful candidate will perform research to address one or more project objectives including: (1) quantify how local-scale processes and atmosphere-ocean interactions shape the strength of coupled feedbacks and their influence on tropical cyclone intensity in a changing climate; (2) determine how large-scale physical drivers and tropical cyclone precursors influence tropical cyclone characteristics, including frequency, landfall, intensity, track, and precipitation; (3) quantify how projected changes in tropical cyclones and sea-level rise will impact coastal regions due to the compounding effects of storm surge, heavy precipitation, and strong winds.Â
Responsibilities include: âÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Design, perform, and analyze high-resolution climate model simulations (using Earth System Models and/or Regional Climate Models) to understand future changes in tropical cyclone activity. âÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Identify simulated tropical cyclones in high-frequency climate model data using tracking algorithms. âÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Develop an understanding of the physical mechanisms that drive changes in tropical cyclone activity. âÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Author peer-reviewed journal articles and communicate scientific results to collaborators and peers.Â
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Â Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Physical Oceanography, or a related field. â¢Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Demonstrated ability to design and run climate model simulations with Earth System Models and/or Regional Climate Models on high-performance computing systems.
â¢Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Experience analyzing large climate model datasets and observations to understand climate variability/change. â¢Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Proficiency with one or more programming languages (e.g., Matlab, Python, Fortran). â¢Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Established publication record in peer-reviewed journals. â¢Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Excellent written and oral communications skills. â¢Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Ability to work independently and to collaborate with a team.
