Macalester College seeks to hire a Scientific Instrument Technician. This position serves as a partner to the science division faculty to help design, machine and produce custom equipment for teaching and scholarship needs. This position also provides some training and supervision for students carrying out machine shop projects. This is full-time, salaried position that reports to the Physics department chair.
This position supports many departments and concentrations at Macalester (Physics and Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics Statistics and Computer Science, Psychology, Environmental Studies as well as Neuroscience and Cognitive Studies.)
Designs and constructs prototype electronic instrumentation and mechanical apparatus for research and teaching laboratories.
Provides support for existing teaching and research laboratory electronics and mechanical instrumentation. Troubleshoots faulty equipment, repairs when feasible, coordinates with manufacturers for return or replacement of equipment.
Oversees the divisional Machine Shop including maintaining stock material supplies and hand tools; routine maintenance of shop equipment; training of students and faculty in equipment use.
Assists and advises faculty and staff on new electronics and instrumentation purchases for teaching and research laboratories when appropriate, including research on available products and options for upgrades.
Assists in the interfacing of computers with electronic instrumentation in teaching and research laboratories. Coordinates this work with the Academic Information Associate.
An associate's degree of electrical technician or a Bachelor's degree in related field.
A minimum of three years of practical experience designing and implementing scientific instrumentation. Prior machine shop experience and willingness to learn.
Ability to evaluate customers’ requests, weigh commercial verses custom options, and select appropriate designs, materials, and tools.
A demonstrated history of creative problem solving and a bias for action.
Experience collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders in pursuit of a shared outcome.
Highly organized with exceptional communication skills.
