Position SummaryThe Earth Science program in the School of the Environment at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (Teaching), Career Track faculty position with a focus on
Earth Science Instruction. This is a nine month, initial three year fixed-term appointment with possibility of renewal. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and benefits are competitive. It is expected that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2022. This position is located on the Pullman, WA campus.
Job dutiesThe successful applicant is expected to teach introductory-level and upper-division courses within the Earth Science core curriculum. These classes include: SOE 101 (Welcome to the Earth: An Introduction to Geology); SOE 102 (Geology for Science Majors); SOE 210 (Earth's History and Evolution); and SOE 303 (Environmental Geology). The applicant would be responsible for designing and delivering lectures in some of these courses, as well as the coordination of graduate student teaching assistants who teach the associated laboratory sections for these courses. There is also potential for the candidate to teach courses within their particular disciplinary strength and interests. Program DescriptionThe Earth Science program within the School of the Environment at WSU offers an undergraduate major in Earth Sciences, and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Geology. Specialties within the Earth Science Program include Structural Geology and Tectonics, Geochronology and Isotope Geochemistry, Mineralogy and Petrology, Geophysics, Volcanology, and Earth Surface Processes. An essential aspect of the mission of the Earth Science program at WSU is providing undergraduate students with foundational scientific understanding about the planet on which they live. Each year we provide fundamental science training to approximately 1500 WSU students in our introductory courses. This hire is intended to help sustain and strengthen this important mission.
The School of the Environment supports the current and future mission of Washington State University as a major land-grant research institution. Our teaching, research, and outreach advance understanding of the Earth's complex and dynamic physical, structural, biogeochemical, ecological and biological systems, as well as the impacts of land use and climate change. Our ~38 faculty, ~100 graduate students, and ~500 undergraduates work together from multiple campuses across Washington state on a broad range of issues, ranging from Earth formation and evolution to present-day processes among Earth's diverse environments. The SoE brings together undergraduate science majors in Earth Science, Environmental and Ecosystem Science, Forest Ecology and Management, and Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Sciences, and offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology and Environmental and Natural Resource Sciences.

Required Qualifications- Earned doctorate in Earth Sciences or related discipline at the time of appointment.
