Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for an Energy Geosciences Modeling Postdoc to join the team.
The Energy Geosciences Division is looking for a postdoc with expertise in numerical modeling and machine learning for discontinuous, evolving systems that can be used in energy geosciences. In this role, you will work with PI Mengsu Hu to apply numerical and machine learning models for fractured, granular, porous geological systems for analysis of mechanics and its coupling with fluid flow and heat transfer within fractures and faults. You should have expertise in modeling and/or machine learning and analyzing coupled thermal, hydrogeologic, and mechanical (THM) processes in the geosciences.
What You Will Do:
- Conduct numerical modeling of discontinuous THMC processes associated with fractures and faults in energy geosciences activities (such as nuclear waste disposal, geothermal energy, and hydrogen storage).
- Collaborate with scientists in the fields of rock mechanics, geophysics, and geochemistry for a wide range of energy geosciences research applications.
- Write peer-review journal articles and technical reports.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- Make use of machine learning toolsets for upscaling, surrogate modeling, and performance assessment.
What is Required:
- A recent Ph.D. in rock mechanics, fracture mechanics, petroleum engineering, geothermal engineering, reservoir engineering or equivalent discipline.
- Expertise in modeling and analysis of discontinuous mechanics in geological media.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a multidisciplinary group of scientists.
- Good verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and for writing peer-reviewed journal publications and technical reports.
Desired Qualifications:
- Programming skills: C/C++, and/or C#, FORTRAN.
Notes:
- This is a full-time 1.5 years, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal up to 3 years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 2 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
- Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
