Position Summary:
The Project Geologist position is a full-time, non-faculty exempt appointment stationed in Boise at the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) office in the University of Idaho's Water Center. A Project Geologist reports to the Director, coordinates work plans with Research Geologists and assists and facilitates the completion of geological and geochemical field research projects at IGS with emphasis on critical minerals. Position requires collection, analysis, and interpretation of geochemical and geological data, the construction of databases, and the publication, and presentation of the research and conclusions to a diverse audience. Project is federally funded and focused on strategic and critical minerals concentrations of the Phosphoria Formation in southeastern Idaho. The Project Geologist assumes co-author or lead author position on stratigraphic columns, technical reports, and other geology-related publications at the IGS. Position involves the supervision of student support staff. The position requires extended field work and interaction with industry, state and federal agencies, academic institutions, professional colleagues, and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Masters degree in Geology or comparable disciplines.

• Experience in development and construction of geologic sections.
• Experience using geochemistry research methods, including data collection and analysis techniques to analyze and synthesize data for reports.
• 6 months of geologic work experience (in addition to any teaching or research assistantship in academia).
• Experience in managing and/or curating datasets and databases, preferably geochemical data.
• Experience with sedimentary rocks and sedimentary processes and good knowledge of general mineralogy and petrology.
• Field skills such as data collection and field safety.
• Experience using computer software and applications for vector graphics.
• Experience in using computer software and applications for word processing, developing spreadsheets, email, and internet research.
• Experience using computer software and applications for GIS.
• Experience conducting independent research.
• Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
• Experience writing research reports and articles.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Greater than 6 months of relevant professional work experience.
• Work experience in one or more of the following:
  • mineral exploration or mining;
  • geochemical applications to geology;
  • geologic mapping.
  
  
  
• Familiarity with the geology of Idaho.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

• Ability to hike over rough terrain and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in variable weather conditions.

Required Licensures, Certifications or other

• Ability to conduct field work alone involving extensive traveling for field assignments.
• Valid driving license.
