California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position in the Mathematics and Statistics Department in an area related to the study and/or promotion of Mathematics Education.

Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona - nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020. 58% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International, 3% two or more races, 3% unknown, and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. 39% of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

College of Science The College's mission is to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. It offers 15 undergraduate degree programs and six Master's degrees across seven academic departments that include: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. Our Center for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (CEMaST) supports K-16 education locally and nationally to increase STEM success and participation for all. The College of Science has approximately 150 full-time faculty, 45 staff, and 4,600 active majors. Our commitment to the teacher-scholar model results in our college being the largest recipient of extramural grant funding on campus. Department of Mathematics and Statistics: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has over 30 full-time faculty and offers a bachelor's degree in mathematics with two options: pure mathematics / secondary teaching and applied mathematics / statistics. We also offer a master's program with four possible emphases: mathematics education, pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. The department currently has over 500 major students, including over 80 graduate students, and serves over 5,000 students each semester.
The department has a strong commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and recently founded a DEI committee to reflect on ways the department can better support all students, staff, and faculty. Cal Poly Pomona has a student body with diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and learning styles, and the Department is looking for faculty who can thrive and contribute meaningfully in this environment. Our majors reflect the diversity of the overall university student population, with over 50% from underrepresented groups, as well as approximately 40% first generation college students. Our department currently has 5 tenure-track faculty in mathematics education. These faculty teach courses for pre-service elementary and secondary teachers, as well as master's level students. Our master's degree emphasis for mathematics education caters to students interested in going into community college teaching and also serves local in-service secondary teachers interested in knowing more in the field; more recently, many students have shown increased interest in applying to PhD programs in mathematics education. There are opportunities to partner with local school districts through research projects and community work. Cal Poly Pomona has a California Math Project site, which provides support and professional development for K-12 teachers and administrators.
Position description: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education. It is anticipated that the person in this position will teach courses in mathematics education and mathematics at the undergraduate and graduate level. It is also expected that the new faculty member will 1) engage in scholarly research and grant activity, 2) serve on department, college, and university committees, and 3) engage in professional development. They will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, such as working with teachers and students in local schools, participating in research/grant work related to K-16 teaching and learning, advising master's degree students, and developing curriculum. Teaching opportunities include courses for pre-service elementary, secondary, and post-secondary teachers; they may also teach lower and upper division mathematics courses.

Minimum requirements include:
Terminal degree must be completed by the start date of the appointment:
EITHER a Doctorate degree (e.g., PhD, EdD, DA) in Mathematics Education, Statistics Education, STEM Education, or a closely related field,
AND a Master's degree in Mathematics (or equivalent coursework),
OR a PhD in Mathematics or Statistics with significant (at least four years) demonstrated experience in research and teaching in mathematics education.
A commitment and a record of contributions to student success through applicant's teaching, scholarship, or service. This will be described in the Student Success Statement, which must address at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above.
Commitment to equity, inclusion, and access for all students
Ability and desire to teach mathematics courses for future elementary teachers, future secondary teachers, or Master's level coursework in mathematics education
K-12, college, or university teaching experience as well as evidence of, or potential for, excellence in university teaching
A focus on, or extensive experience in, K-16 mathematics education and/or pre-service teacher training
Evidence of, or potential for, conducting scholarly research activities in mathematics education and directing Master's thesis students
Experience with, or potential for, working collaboratively with schools or community groups, particularly in diverse settings
