The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) is seeking a geologist with experience in petroleum and subsurface studies, who will be responsible for multiple, concurrent projects relating to research, education, and outreach.
This position will be located in the office of the NMBGMR in Socorro, NM, which is on the campus on New Mexico Tech (NMT). A majority of the petroleum geologist’s tasks will be performed in the office or in the onsite sample repository with occasional travel to the field. The primary data sets utilized by the NMBGMR petroleum geologist will include well logs, drill cuttings, cores, and 2D/3D seismic. Research will be presented through peer reviewed journals and professional conferences and seeking external funding will be a component of the duties. There will be regular interaction and collaboration with research and academic divisions at NMT, including the Petroleum Recovery Research Center, the Earth and Environmental Science Department, and the Petroleum Engineering Department. Duties related to these collaborations may include advising graduate students, serving on thesis committees, grant writing, collaborative research, or teaching.
Bachelor’s degree in geology or related field of study Minimum of 3 years of relevant petroleum/subsurface geology experience
Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
Master’s or PhD degree in geology
Proficient in subsurface mapping and integration of subsurface data
Proficient with subsurface mapping tools (i.e. Kingdom, Petra, etc.)
Familiarity with New Mexico geology
Ability to obtain a valid driver's license and safely operate a motor vehicle
Ability to occasionally lift rock samples weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ability to occasionally conduct field work in remote areas with rough terrain
Membership in local and regional geological societies
