Under the direction of the Vice President of Instruction, plan, organize, and direct the operations within the division of Math, Science and Engineering; administer, supervise and evaluate the performance of instruction and classified personnel; evaluate educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in student success.
The Dean provides administrative leadership to a number of departments with general education and transfer programs including: Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Science (Astronomy, Geography, Geology, Oceanography, Physics), Biology, and Chemistry.
The Dean functions within a college structure that emphasizes college and district-wide collaboration and is assigned responsibility for selected college-wide processes.
Administrators may additionally be assigned responsibility for a combination of day, evening, and weekend programs and activities, on-campus and off- site.
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: Master's degree from an accredited institution plus five years of achievement in management, supervision or leadership programs, departments or divisions within an institution of higher education, with emphasis in one or more of the areas to which the Dean position is assigned.
Equity-minded management, supervision or leadership experience within an institution of higher education or equivalent.
Demonstrates a commitment to and support of Cuyamaca College's vision, mission, and values in the MSE Division's programs and services and within the institution.
Demonstrates a commitment to and support of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility in a comprehensive, student-centered environment that facilitates student learning and success.
Demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds; students who are differently abled, and students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Provides the administration, direction, planning, and coordination of instructional disciplines and departments in accordance with legal requirements, district policies, and effective instructional principles and practices.
Directs the recruitment, selection, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of instructional personnel, and classified staff. Provides leadership with orientations and in-service education for the professional development of program faculty and staff.
Ability to lead effective division discussions regarding strategies that will support student success and equity across STEM disciplines and lead to successful STEM careers.
Provides knowledge and support of nationally recognized strategies for success in STEM teaching and learning that will lead to increased participation in STEM careers for the college's diverse student population.
The ability to advance the College's strategic goals related to access, success, retention, eliminating equity gaps, and increasing equity in hiring in the Mathematics, Science, & Engineering Division's programs and within the institution.
Develops divisional course schedule to meet strategic enrollment planning principles and goals.
Responsible for the coordination of program review and planning, curriculum development and outcomes assessment for the MSE division.
Plan, recommend and implement multiple budgets for assigned areas; upon expenditure variations, take necessary actions to assure compliance with budget limitations and established fiscal policies.
Demonstrates effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Communicates and interprets program objectives and offerings to students, staff, faculty, community organizations and others.
Facilitate communication and understanding of perspectives among faculty, staff, students, and the community within the framework of a multi-college district. When necessary, facilitate the resolution of student, instructor and staff conflicts and problems.
Participates in college and district governance through councils, committees and taskforces; represents the district at local, state, or national meetings.
Consistently performs duties with concern, courtesy, and respect for others; employs a team approach through collaboration and empowerment of staff; exhibits creativity and flexibility in a time of continuing change; seeks solutions using effective problem-solving techniques.
Commitment to the community college concept, including the open door philosophy and culturally responsive curriculum for a diverse student population.
Commitment to a comprehensive student-centered environment that facilitates learning and student success.
Ability to advocate for and implement instructional support services and programs that promote student success and completion of their educational goals.
Ability to successfully delegate, ensure adherence to College and District policies, practices and procedures, and hold others responsible while instilling confidence among the faculty and staff.
Ability to interpret, articulate, and implement pertinent state and federal laws and regulations concerning community colleges, including Education Code, Title 5, and other administrative regulations.
Experience writing successful grant applications, and experience with resource management.
Typical office environment in an educational setting.
