Position Summary: The Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) is seeking a motivated and energetic Postdoctoral Fellow to support and expand our economic geology/mineral deposit program with emphasis geologic mapping and field-based research. The Postdoctoral Fellow is a full-time, non-faculty exempt appointment stationed at the University of Idaho's Moscow campus. This position reports to the Director, coordinates work plans with Research Geologists, and facilitates the completion of geologic mapping and related research at the IGS with an emphasis on economic geology and mineral deposits. Position requires extended travel, and collection, analysis, and interpretation of field, geochemical, petrographic, and geochronological data, as well as the timely publication and presentation of the research and conclusions to a diverse audience. The position is currently funded for 2 years through a University of Idaho initiative. The successful candidate is expected to apply for and secure extramural funding, in collaboration with IGS staff, to extend the appointment and is encouraged to build their own research portfolio in subjects of overlapping personal and IGS interests within the broader economic geology/mineral deposits area. For the first year, work will require interaction with, and support of, federally funded IGS STATEMAP projects near Salmon in east-central Idaho and the Elk City gold district in north-central Idaho. The successful candidate assumes co-author or lead author position on geologic maps, datasets, and publications, both in IGS publication series and in peer-reviewed journals. Position involves the supervision of student support staff. The position requires interaction with industry, state and federal agencies, professional colleagues, and the public and is expected to build strong collaborations and partnerships with relevant academic and industry partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree in Geology or Earth Sciences.
Experience:
In the development and construction of geologic maps and cross sections.
Field experience, such as navigation, sample collection, rock identification, and field safety.
With mineral deposit systems and related data sets.
Using computer software and applications for vector graphics and illustrations and applications for GIS.
Using word processing and spreadsheet software.
Conducting independent research.
In communicating effectively, both orally and written, with a diverse range of individuals.
Preferred Qualifications:
Relevant non-academic professional work experience: mineral industry experience preferred.
Proven record of successful extramural funding.
Record of peer-reviewed publications.
Published geologic map(s). Experience with alteration mapping techniques. Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Experience with igneous and/or metasedimentary rocks.
Experience using geochemical research methods, including data collection and analysis techniques, to analyze and synthesize data for reports.
Experience applying geochemical and/or geochronologic data to mineral deposit investigations.
Familiarity with interpreting lidar datasets.
Familiarity with the geology of Idaho. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain professional relationships.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Ability to hike over rough terrain with as much as 4,000 ft of relief and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds in variable weather conditions.
Ability to conduct field work alone involving extensive traveling for field assignments in rough terrain and primitive camping in inclement weather.
