EARTH AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES (BL-GEOL-IUBLA)

The Judson Mead Geological Field Station (IUGFS) is a unique Indiana University facility located in Montana and operated by the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) for one of the nation's top ranked field geology programs. The facility includes state of the art classroom building, faculty housing units, kitchen and cafeteria facilities, student dorm rooms, accessory buildings, and a resident manager house. The Field Station and EAS strives to lead the nation in:

• Teaching geosciences in the field;
• Field-based geoscience research, both for new knowledge about the geology of SW Montana and better ways to teach geosciences in the field;
• Development of best practices in field geosciences.
• We offer a world-class facility located in some of the most diverse and complex geology in North America. During the summer months the facility is an active teaching campus with up to 100 students, faculty, and staff on-site. In the off-season it is used by outside groups and the winter is an active time for maintenance and improvements.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Responsible for providing meals for campers and staff during summer camp program, preparing meals for special diets,
• Orders food and cleaning/organizing kitchen and appliances.
• Responsible for general cleaning and maintaining meal records and food orders.
• Ensures that each staff member, guest and visitor receives the highest caliber of service. Manages all aspects of food service for residential camp
• Supervises and coordinate the kitchen staff
• Plans meals Monday through Friday for up to 100 people per meal in advance
• Works with administrative staff on travel camp menu planning
• Reviews meal plans with certified nutritionist (based on availability)
• Ensures cleanliness of food preparation and delivery areas
• Follows State health department regulations pertaining to safe food practice
• Works with SLVHD Food Inspectors to ensure legal compliance
• Solicits food donations
• Assists administrative staff in food budget planning
• Responsible for rotating stock when new orders are checked in
• Places food orders in accordance with budget and in a timely manner
• Checks in all food/supply orders
• Prepares all meals on time as scheduled or assigned by the director
• Be willing and prepared to meet special food requirements for both campers and staff; e.g. gluten free and vegetarian diets
• Have food items available for staff on weekends
• Complete monthly food inventory by the end of each month
• Post menus daily
• Keeps kitchen clean and in accordance with department of health regulations at all times
• Sanitizes kitchen surfaces regularly throughout the day
• Washes hands frequently while working in the kitchen and in accordance with department of health regulations
• Reports any accidents or injuries to directors
• Assists in weekly deep cleaning of specific areas in the kitchen, e.g. floors, vent hoods, etc.
• All other duties as assigned

EDUCATION

Required

• General knowledge at the high school level

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 2 years of successful experience as head cook
• Experience with ordering and meal planning
• Experience cooking and serving over 100 meals per day

SKILLS

Required

• Knowledges of food allergies and food related diseases, and the ingredients that may cause the allergy/disease
• Ability to manage kitchen staff
• Ability to modify meals for special dietary needs
• Knowledge of generally accepted well balanced nutrition guidelines
• Current First Aid/CPR and Safe Serve certifications
• Excellent working skills including: communication skills, organizational skills and attention to details
• Ability to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury)

The person in this role must have the ability to move heavy objects. Ability to stand for long duration of time. Ability to work in harsh conditions. Ability to dicern sounds. Ability to position onself at low levels. Ability to work with hazaderous materials. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Cardwell, Montana

The Station is located at 633 South Boulder Rd in the Tobacco Root Mountains just south of Cardwell, Montana near Yellowstone National Park, Lewis and Clark Caverns and the Butte-Anaconda mining district.

$20 - $26 per hour
