Job Description
Smith College is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on geodetically constrained block models of the Pacific Northwest and Cascadia Subduction Zone. This is a full-time, 2 year grant funded position with a preferred starting date of October 2023. The position will be based at Smith College, a traditionally women's liberal arts college, with opportunities for scientific exchange locally within the Five College Consortium, as well as with collaborators at the University of Oregon, University of Washington, and Central Washington University. In addition to competitive salary and benefits, the position also includes support for travel to workshops and conferences.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The postdoc will develop block models to describe geodetic data as a result of microplate motions and earthquake cycle effects, including coupling, seismicity, and slow slip on the Cascadia megathrust. The results will be integrated with those from other teams working on geophysical and geological characterization of natural hazards in the Cascadia region, including the three-dimensional velocity structure, distribution and slip history of crustal faults, and earthquake and tsunami source modeling.
Opportunities exist for mentoring of undergraduate researchers in active tectonics and participating in undergraduate teaching.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: Ph.D. in geosciences, or in an allied discipline with application to geophysics
Skills: Highly qualified candidates will have expertise in earthquake cycle processes related to active faults, use of geodetic data to constrain tectonic processes, and Python and/or Matlab programming.
