Position Details:

The Department of Mathematics at Texas Christian University (TCU) invites applications for an Assistant Director of the Actuarial Sciences program beginning in August 2024 with the intent of succeeding the current Director in a few years upon their retirement. The starting academic rank will be Assistant Professor of Professional Practice. Hiring at a higher rank may be possible for exceptional candidates.

Job expectations will include a base teaching load of 13-15 credit hours per year, undergraduate advising and professional development, support for career and internship placement, job fairs and corporate networking, interfacing with national actuarial organizations, and, eventually as Director, overall administrative responsibility for the Actuarial Sciences program. A more detailed list of responsibilities can be provided upon request.

Candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. Preference will be given to candidates with a graduate degree in a relevant mathematical field or with relevant teaching and/or industry experience. Excellent teaching, service, and administrative potential are expected. The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their teaching and service, to the excellence and diversity of the TCU academic community.

Department Details:

Founded in 1873, TCU is a secular institution of approximately 12,000 students with a faculty devoted to excellence in teaching and research. TCU values diversity and inclusion in students, staff, and faculty; highly engaged and interdisciplinary learning; and community engagement. The Department of Mathematics is a small, collegial unit, currently with 20 full-time faculty members. The department serves approximately 125 majors in Math, Actuarial Science, and Data Science and has a small graduate program offering Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Mathematics. Roughly a third of department majors are actuarial students, and the Actuarial Science program carries a UCAP-IC designation with the Society of Actuaries. The university is located within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, a vibrant metropolitan area of about 8 million people.

School/College Description:

The TCU College of Science & Engineering (CSE) encompasses 10 departments (Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, Nutritional Sciences, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology) as well the Ranch Management Program, which offers both an undergraduate degree and a one-year certificate program. The College is also home to the Pre-Health Professions Institute, the Karyn Purvis Institute for Child Development, the Institute of Behavioral Research, and the Institute for Ranch Management. The College is the second largest at TCU in terms of both undergraduate enrollment and number of majors. CSE contains a disproportionate percentage of high achieving students, as evidenced by the fact that almost one-half the students in the Honors College have majors in the College of Science & Engineering. Research opportunities abound for undergraduates, with over 40 percent of majors engaging in a substantive experience during which they work one-on-one with their faculty mentor. The College also has five doctoral programs and 16 master’s programs as well as two graduate certificate programs. The College faculty are true teacher-scholars, for whom instruction and research are viewed as complementary activities.
