Job Summary
The Minnesota Department of Health's (MDH) Environmental Health Division is looking for a Drinking Water Protection (DWP) South Region Operations Supervisor. This position protects public health in the use and consumption of water via the implementation and enforcement of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and other Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) rules as they pertain to noncommunity public water systems (NPWSs) in the Unit’s South Region. In this role, you will also provide other core public health functions for the MDH Drinking Water Protection (DWP) Section. The position provides supervision and direction to NPWS Program personnel in the Unit’s South Region. Responsibilities include:
Develop plans and policies to support the implementation of statutes, rules, and standards to strengthen the Noncommunity Public Water Supply Program.
Work in coordination with the Unit Supervisor to develop and administer Unit business and work plans.
Analyze the Unit’s resource allocation and work efficacy using a variety of tracking tools.
Act as coordinator and liaison with the DWP Source Water Protection (SWP) Unit.
Aid in coordinating the activities of the seven District Office Bacteriological Laboratories.
Direct supervision of 5-6 Public Health Sanitarians and a Public Health Sanitarian Supervisor.
The position is open statewide. Its final assigned location will be determined based on the selected candidate. Candidates may have the option for some telework; however, telework schedules are based on the unit's operational needs and are at supervisory discretion. On occasion, the incumbent will be required to travel to various regional offices and onsite to public water system. An employee in the position must reside in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, or South Dakota.
Minimum Qualifications
Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian (REHS/RS) in the State of Minnesota. If not currently a REHS/RS in Minnesota, must have REHS/RS in another state and obtain Minnesota REHS/RS within one (1) year of employment.
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Public or Environmental Health, Food Science/Technology, Toxicology, Soil Science, Environmental Studies/Ecology or Civil, Chemical, Environmental or Sanitary Engineering.
Three years of professional experience investigating, ensuring compliance, and providing technical assistance in the water sanitation discipline.
Previous supervisory, lead worker, or leadership experience over a water sanitation program, section, unit, or team.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with:
Organizing and directing large, complex environmental health programs. Developing policy recommendations, interpreting law, regulations and policy to industry, government, and the public.
Motivating, supervising, and evaluating subordinate employees effectively coordinating functions to accomplish goals of the programs.
Solving complex problems where there are no clear solutions.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with federal, state, and local officials, community groups, regulated community and the general public.
Knowledge and detailed understanding of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
Effectively communicating verbally and in writing, including speaking and presenting at public meetings.
Physical Requirements
