Job Description Summary | The Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences (GMES) at Michigan Technological University is inviting applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking a scholar to develop a vibrant, externally funded research program in the broad area of engineering geology for geological and mining engineering. Applicants with experience and accomplishments commensurate with a higher rank may be considered for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
The successful candidate will have earned a doctorate in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline at the time of employment. Specific research areas of interest include but are not limited to geohazards, infrastructure assessment, geotechnical remote sensing, the application of data science and artificial intelligence in geomechanics and geotechnics, geohydrology, and dam design and monitoring. Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in developing strong collaborative research and educational programs within GMES, with other programs within the university and with industry. Successful candidates will also be committed to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in geological and mining engineering.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) | Teach required and elective undergraduate and graduate courses for the Geological Engineering program.
Develop and sustain an active externally-funded research program in geotechnical and geological engineering, including but not limited to infrastructure assessment, spatial modeling of natural resources considering various spatial scales and data types, analysis of geohazards, groundwater and contaminant hydrology, utilization of aerial/satellite-based remote sensing for data acquisition, or the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in data processing and modeling.
Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in their academic and research endeavors.
Contribute to the continuity and accreditation of the Geological Engineering program.
Participate in services at departmental, college, and university levels and externally.
Contribute to initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion within the department and university.
Integrate safety practices into daily activities and commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. |
