Overview:
The Geological Sciences and Criminal Justice departments at Salem State University invite applicants for a full-time temporary joint position beginning September 2024. We seek a forensic geoscientist with expertise in earth materials, modern analytical technologies, and/or criminal investigations who will complement the research and undergraduate teaching expertise of our present departments. This position is part of a Salem State initiative to help advance our forward-thinking geoscience curriculum, including a growing Forensic Geoscience major and Forensic Science minor. The position may be reappointed for up to two additional years subject to available funding, and with continued growth of the program it is expected there may be additional tenure track lines in the departments.
Our departments have a strong commitment to the inclusion and engagement of our growing population of diverse students. We seek candidates who will successfully serve as mentors and role models for students belonging to groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the geological sciences. Teaching assignments will vary based upon the expertise of the candidate and programmatic needs but may include: Forensic Geology; introductory general education courses in the geosciences; Upper-level applied geoscience and major elective courses in the candidate’s area of expertise and in support of the Forensic Geoscience major; senior research advisor.

Duties:
Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. Duties include teaching, advising, and contributions to continuously improve the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. The position is subject to available funding.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD or ABD in the geological sciences; and if ABD, doctorate must be conferred by August 2024
- Expertise in geology and Earth materials
- Expertise in advanced analytical techniques and/or criminalistics
- Teaching experience and familiarity with modern pedagogical techniques in the geosciences and/or criminalistics/criminal justice
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in forensic geology and criminal investigations including but not limited to microscopy, geochemistry, remote sensing, and geophysical investigations
- Industry experience in the applied fields of geological sciences as it applies to the fields of geological sciences and criminal justice
- Desire and ability to develop an externally funded, undergraduate-friendly research program
- Experience with and passion for teaching undergraduate students
- Experience with undergraduate research
- Record of scholarly research in the geological sciences and preferably also in forensics
