This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, hourly, intermittent (as needed) Ordinary Mariner positions in the Ship Operations unit within the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.
The Ordinary Mariner position assists in the maintenance and operation of the Research Vessel (R/V) Elakha in a safe, efficient and effective manner, under the immediate supervision of the Ship's Master.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and two oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus and the 54-foot coastal research vessel, Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include Master's and PhD degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a Master's degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.
Merchant Mariner's Credential with an endorsement of Ordinary Seaman or higher issued by the Coast Guard

· This position is required to work on board the R/V Elakha at sea on research cruises that may last from one day up to one week before returning to port, in ocean and weather conditions which are highly variable. · As part of ongoing COVID 19 mitigation efforts, the unit may require PCR testing as well as quarantine and self-reporting for up to fourteen days prior to employment.
· The incumbent must not be incapacitated by sea-sickness.
· Ship Operations is a seven day per week operation; therefore, weekend and holiday work is required. Shift and/or work assignment may change based on operational needs.
· The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
