Oregon State University Libraries and Press is seeking a Director of the Guin Library. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Marilyn Potts Guin Library houses the physical library collections supporting teaching, research and outreach at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC). These specialized collections cover a broad range of marine-related topics including fisheries, aquaculture, oceanography, geology, environmental and climate studies, and biology. The Guin Library Director and library staff facilitate access to these materials, and to all of the digital and physical resources organized and shared by Oregon State University Libraries and Press (OSULP). The Guin Library is central to the mission of HMSC: to improve scientific understanding of marine systems, coastal processes and resources, and to apply this knowledge to social, economic, and environmental issues. HMSC is known for multidisciplinary research, education and outreach that is world-class and international in scope. It is also known for providing inspiring, hands-on educational opportunities to students at all levels, to train the marine science leaders of tomorrow and to build real-world solutions to pressing problems.

HMSC is undergoing significant expansion. The state-of-the-art Valley Marine Science Building was just completed in 2021, and plans to expand student housing in Newport are currently underway. The Guin Library Director applies specialized knowledge from information science and related disciplines to connect HMSC students, staff and researchers to the high-quality information they need to solve problems and make decisions. They are an engaged and active contributor to the HMSC community, engaging with the faculty and students, and serving on committees, task forces and workgroups to advance projects and initiatives.
The Guin Library Director reports directly to the Delpha and Donald Campbell Dean of Libraries at Oregon State University. They are also supported closely by the Associate Vice President for Research and Operations and the HMSC Operations Manager, who are available to help with day-to-day decisions and understanding the HMSC context. The Guin Library director is a full voting member of the OSULP management team and contributes to the overall strategic planning and management of OSULP. They represent the interests of the HMSC community on the OSU Libraries Collections Council. They build and sustain relationships with the faculty and staff across all programs and disciplines at HMSC. They enhance the visibility of library services and connect students and faculty at HMSC to expert help from OSU librarians in areas like information literacy, scholarly communication, data management, learning space design, copyright and intellectual property. They communicate regularly with other library personnel to share strategies, allocate responsibilities and identify opportunities.
OSU Librarians contribute to the teaching mission of the university and often work in partnership with faculty in colleges, departments and programs. The Guin Library Director engages in formal and informal teaching of internal and external audiences, including other library departments. Teaching activities include: workshops featuring library services, collections and research support; 1:1 consultations; training exercises; developing online learning guides and asynchronous tutorials. Librarians also work collaboratively with faculty to develop and improve research and inquiry-base assignments. OSULP librarians are expected to be engaged members of the library profession, and they are supported in these activities. The Guin Library Director is an active member of the international community of marine science librarians. They also participate in service and professional development activities within OSULP and OSU.
Candidates with appropriate academic credentials, faculty status and/or teaching experience may qualify for an academic position on the library faculty (tenure is negotiable commensurate with Oregon State University policies and guidelines).
Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
Typically requires MLS or Master's degree in Library Science, History or related field. 3 years in an academic setting; evidence of leadership or experience managing projects, leading teams or directing initiatives.
Requirements :
MLIS from an accredited program or international equivalent AND at least a Bachelor's degree in a science or social science field relevant to HMSC's research mission; OR a research-focused terminal degree in a field relevant to HMSC's research mission.
Experience. Provide concrete examples that demonstrate you have:
- At least two years of experience in an academic or research library with a demonstrated record of advancement or progressively increasing responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas in an academic or research library: collection development; cataloging/metadata; or scholarly communication.
- At least one year of experience as a supervisor of full-time employees: hiring; assigning and evaluating work; mentoring and training; responding to grievances; and conducting evaluations. This record may include, but should not be limited to, supervision of student workers or volunteers.
- Experience with successful project or service management, including: managing budgets, setting priorities, facilitating communication, creating documentation and assessing impact.
- Experience building and fostering collaborative relationships that advance library goals.
Skills and Dispositions. Provide evidence of your:
- Ability to develop library services that are equitable, inclusive and anti-racist, and to critically examine existing services to see where changes are needed.
- Commitment to transparency and accountability with library users, employees and other stakeholders.
- Ability to help library employees solve day to day problems, using appropriate data and input and applying relevant library and university policies.
- Strong intrapersonal skills that support self-awareness including, but not limited to: understanding your skills and strengths, critically examining limitations and biases, and professional practices that demonstrate humility, emotional literacy, self-motivation and/or accountability.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Type:
The Guin Director will primarily work regular weekday business hours at the Guin Library. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for event hosting and preparation, or to respond to emergency situations. The Guin Director may occasionally work away from the primary worksite, including work performed on OSU's main campus. There is a possibility of scheduled remote work that aligns with these expectations. This will be negotiated with the supervisor and documented using OSU's Flexible Work Agreement. Flexible Work Agreements are subject to periodic reviews by the Dean of Libraries, and can be terminated with 3 days' notice if the business need of the unit requires it. Some travel can be expected, including travel to main campus or other branch/extension locations, conferences, off-campus meetings or donor visits.
