Description: The Department of Geosciences at Princeton University has an opening for a professional technician to manage the department's natural history collections, appointed at the rank of Associate Professional Specialist or more senior. This position will perform a variety of tasks and functions in support of the preservation, relocation, enhancement, and access to a significant collection of rock, mineral, fossil, and other geological specimens. Duties will include but are not limited to (1) Organization, storage, and care of mineral, fossil, and rock specimens according to professional standards of conservation; (2) Verification of sample identifications and archiving and preservation of labels, documents, and catalogs; (3) management of the relocation process of specimens in the collections from Guyot Hall by working with specialty vendors as needed; (4) development of new methods to improve usage of items in the specimen collections in undergraduate and graduate instruction and in building exhibits and displays; and (5) manage the transfer and disposition of samples to other institutions as warranted. The candidate must be able to perform these tasks independently and be able to exercise sound scientific judgment. Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Geosciences, Mineral Sciences, or a related field, although especially qualified individuals with a Master's degree will be considered. Broad knowledge of minerals and fossils and experience with their identification and characterization, including the use of advanced analytical techniques, is required.
