The successful candidates will have primary teaching responsibilities in Physical Geography lecture and laboratory. Approximately 20% of the teaching assignment may also include one of the following: Human Geography, California Geography, World Regional, Field Studies in Geography, or geospatial courses, depending on the candidate's expertise and experience. MVC and the Geography discipline have been growing in enrollment, and opportunities exist to develop new courses, and to offer honors versions of existing courses in collaboration with the MVC Honors Program. Participation in departmental and college service is expected, including contributing to course and program-level assessments.
We are looking for a colleague who will demonstrate discipline expertise and show sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and abilities of community college students. The ideal candidate will be equity minded and eager to work with a diverse student population and will be experienced in culturally responsive pedagogical practices for engaging African American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native-American, and Pacific Islander students, which are historically underserved. MVC has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. Education:EDUCATION: Master's degree in geography; OR bachelor's degree in geography AND master's degree in geology, history, meteorology, or oceanography; OR the Equivalent. (All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions). Experience:EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate for either of the two positions will have demonstrated successful experience teaching physical geography lecture and lab, and experience or demonstrated interest in teaching human, cultural, or regional geography at the college level (community college or university). We also seek a candidate with teaching experience in GIS, web mapping, cartography, or other areas of geospatial methods for the second of the two positions. Professional experience working with geospatial technology outside of academia may also be considered.
Must have a demonstrated commitment to inclusionary and innovative teaching at the community college level including a minimum of two years of classroom teaching experience. The ideal candidate will exhibit teaching competence in more than one area of specialization in the field. Candidates with training and experience in GIS desired but not required. Experience with assessment of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) is highly desired.
The ideal candidate will (1) have recent experience working with Latinx/Hispanic, African American, Native American and other racially/ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom; (2) possess an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped the experiences and representation of these students within higher education; especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes; (3) demonstrate a willingness to examine and refine instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support various groups of marginalized students; and (4) demonstrate experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom. The candidate will also demonstrate knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices; (5) experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Geography, particularly as it relates to the relevance of Geography to students' lives, interests, and communities; (6) an interest and willingness to develop new course curriculum.

Duties and Responsibilities:DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: The successful candidate will, among other things: 1. Demonstrate commitment to student equity and ability to facilitate, participate and lead in programmatic efforts, both within the department and campus-wide, to help students in low-performing groups succeed. 2. Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent and as assigned based on enrollment management principles and within discipline and department guidelines for course rotation and course scheduling. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluations, office hours and institutional service such as participation on college committees, involvement in student activities and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement. 3. Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record. 4. Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis. 5. Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in department meetings and committees. 6. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies. 7. Teach late afternoon and/or evening assignments as needed as part of the regular contract. 8. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication with students. 9. Demonstrate commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. 10. Complete 24 hours of 'flex credit' through various professional development activities, workshops or seminars as well as 8 hours of equity-related training. 11. Engage in expected professional obligations including participation in discipline/department decision-making processes, Improvement of Instruction, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, maintenance of legal documents and adherence to FERPA requirements. 13. Maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
