Job Description BASIC FUNCTION:
Thank you for your interest in applying for Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Geography discipline at Moreno Valley College (MVC).
The successful candidate will have primary teaching responsibilities in Physical Geography lecture and laboratory. The teaching assignment will include a combination of in-person, online, and hybrid classes for a total of 15 units, or 5 classes each in the Fall and Spring semester. The ability to incorporate geospatial technology (story maps, Google Earth, ArcGIS Online, etc.) into classroom teaching, and involve students in outdoor lab activities such as measurement, observation, and data collection is desirable.
We are looking for a colleague who will demonstrate discipline expertise and show sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds and abilities of community college students. The ideal candidate will be equity minded and eager to work with a diverse student population and will be experienced in culturally responsive pedagogical practices for engaging African American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native-American, and Pacific Islander students, which are historically underserved. MVC has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community.
EDUCATION:
Master's degree in Geography; OR Bachelor's degree in Geography AND Master's degree in Geology, History, Meteorology, or Oceanography; OR the Equivalent.
Ph.D. desired (not required)
(All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions).
EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to inclusionary and innovative teaching, and a minimum of one year (approximately 6 course sections) of classroom experience teaching physical geography lecture and lab at the college level (community college or university). Experience with assessment of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) is highly desired.
The ideal candidate will (1) have recent experience working with Latinx/Hispanic, African American, Native American and other racially/ethnically, socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom; (2) possess an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped the experiences and representation of these students within higher education; especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes; (3) demonstrate a willingness to examine and refine instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support various groups of marginalized students; and (4) demonstrate experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom. The candidate will also demonstrate knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices; (5) experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Geography, particularly as it relates to the relevance of Geography to students' lives, interests, and communities.

Duties and Responsibilities: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will, among other things: 1. Demonstrate commitment to student equity and ability to facilitate, participate and lead in programmatic efforts, both within the department and campus-wide, to help students in low-performing groups succeed. 2. Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent and as assigned based on enrollment management principles and within discipline and department guidelines for course rotation and course scheduling. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluations, office hours and institutional service such as participation on college committees, involvement in student activities and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement. 3. Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record. 4. Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis. 5. Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in department meetings and committees. 6. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies. 7. Teach late afternoon and/or evening assignments as needed as part of the regular contract. 8. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication with students. 9. Demonstrate commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. 10. Complete 24 hours of 'flex credit' through various professional development activities, workshops or seminars as well as 8 hours of equity-related training. 11. Engage in expected professional obligations including participation in discipline/department decision-making processes, Improvement of Instruction, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, maintenance of legal documents and adherence to FERPA requirements. 13. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. This is a long-term temporary, non-tenure track position for the 2025-2026 Academic Year. RCCD employees who have served in a long-term, temporary capacity within the last three years are not eligible to apply for this position. 2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule. 3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents. 4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee. 5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy. 6. Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is expected. 7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
NOTE: This is a long-term temporary, non-tenure track position only and will terminate after the end of the 2025-2026 Academic Year. There is no guarantee that this position will be funded after the 2025-2026 academic year.
