Description:
Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sustainability position in the Department of Geology, Environment, and Sustainability at Hofstra University. The department seeks candidates with research and teaching interests combining eco-agriculture and sustainable food systems with urban/suburban sustainability. The candidate will contribute to the overall interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate teaching and research mission of the department.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teaching general courses in sustainability science and policy.
Teaching an existing course in sustainability and food.
Developing additional undergraduate and graduate level courses in their areas of expertise.
Mentoring undergraduate students in independent research.
Supervising MA students in their theses and internships.
Taking leadership of current and future projects (such as proposals for a community garden and rooftop growing spaces) to utilize the Hofstra campus as a laboratory for sustainable suburban land use and urban agriculture.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree required in field related to the position
Successful candidates will have demonstrated a commitment to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in an educational environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Desire to collaborate with colleagues who have expertise in climate, paleoclimate, geohazards, data analysis, hydrology, food culture, and anthropology.
Ability to take advantage of the potential for significant local and regional impacts by addressing issues of social and economic justice in food systems through projects that take advantage of the resources and community outreach of Hofstra's Center for Civic Engagement, the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, and Long Island's active local food movement.
