General Summary
The Department of Geography and Geology seeks a Part-time Lecturer to teach a class in Documenting and Recording Historic Places for Winter 2026. The class is scheduled to meet on six Thursday evenings as well as five full day meetings on Saturdays and Sundays (see full schedule in detailed description.Schedule:
On EMU Campus, Ypsilanti: 5:30-7:10 PM on Thursdays: 1/15; 1/29; 2/12; 3/12; 3/26; 4/9. Weekend Field Work (Documenting/Recording): 11am-4pm, 2/14; 2/15; 3/14; 4/12; 9am-2pm, 4/11.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Using a combination of classroom, online, and site visits, the part-time lecturer will instruct in the recording and documentation of historic structures, landscapes, and/or buildings required in the completion of National Register of Historic Places nominations and SHPO architectural inventory forms. Additionally, the instructor will work with students in writing property descriptions, histories, and evaluations of historical significance, and producing field sketches and architectural photography. This class should provide students with basic skills in planning the treatment of historic buildings, structures, and landscapes, all informed by best practice and the Secretary of Interior?s Standards.
Perform related departmental duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
An M.S. in Historic Preservation or related field is required, at least ten (10) years of experience in the historic preservation industry, specifically related to recording and documentation of historic places for planning preservation treatment. Documented experience in architectural photography, completing and submitting successful National Register of Historic Places nominations and Michigan SHPO architectural inventory forms and evaluation of eligibility and integrity is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in local historic district study committees, Section 106 above-ground surveys, Multiple Property Designations, Historic Structure Reports, other state survey formats, digital documentation techniques, and/or HABS/HAER/HALS histories are a plus.
